Doritos Toasted Corn

My aim for this project was to redesign the packaging of an existing product/brand. I chose Doritos, and my inspiration came from the origins of the tortilla chip.

Tortillas were first made by the indigenous people of Mesoamerica, and were a cornerstone of their cuisine. I wanted the viewer to relate the Toasted Corn Dorito with authentic flavours, so how better than to bring them back in time to the originals?

I took my primary inspiration from the art of the Aztec culture. They had a ball game with ritual associations, and I thought it would be an interesting parallel to how the Doritos are a snack that people often eat while watching sports or other games.

With these as my two ideas as my reference points, I designed the new Doritos packaging.

I had a great time with this project, putting in all the little details like the sports shoes and shirt, and the powdery coating on the fingers of the character. I think it is a unique packaging that would stand out amongst the existing Doritos product line, as well as on the supermarket shelf. At least, it would pay homage to the original creators of the tortilla chip we know and love today.
