Sometime in 2019, when I was working as a freelance illustrator in my hometown of Semarang, I got a client who needed me to design some signage for their rental house. In Indonesian this place would be called a 'kost, kos, kos-kosan', etc.
At the time I hadn't studied graphic design yet, but I thought, "Why not? I'll give it a shot."
It was very informational, sure, but it's just very heavy, and doesn't give the feel of a home as much as a techy Internet cafe (maybe?).
A couple of years later, I decided to update this visual system. I kept the colour scheme, and of course I couldn't change the name, but almost everything else was overhauled.
Top to Bottom: Full logo, Simplified logo
I changed the blue and yellow to be less saturated and softer, so that it would be easier on the eyes. In the original, the emphasis was on the letter 'O' in 'Home', where I designed it that way to represent the rising sun. I also used it as a repeating element to cap off lines.
In the update, I put the emphasis on the letter 'H' instead. I kept the tiny circle as a doorknob this time, with the H representing a door. I added a roof over the wordmark logo, to make it clear that this is a place to live. The simplified logo forms a sort of monogram that could be used in all the applications where the full logo doesn't fit.
Overall, I'm very happy with the redesign. It fits the company better, and is more recognisable. It's simple and purposeful, which I think makes it more memorable.
